The text of the Blunt Amendment consists of the language taken from a National Right to Life Committee endorsed bill, the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act (S. 1467, H.R. 1179). It would amend the national health care law to prevent the imposition of regulatory mandates that violate the religious or moral convictions of those who purchase or provide health insurance.<br /><br />This debate is not limited to the specific parameters of the birth-control mandate. The regeneration of living tissue, or regrowth of lost tissue, which is what we were able to achieve, is encouraging.”<br /><br />All of the patients were enrolled in the trial within 1.5 months of having a heart attack, and had their hearts scanned with an MRI. Seventeen of the patients had a biopsy of their heart tissue so the researchers could extract the heart’s stem cells and expand them in the lab; the researchers then re-infusing 12 million to 25 million new heart cells into each patient’s heart artery 1.5 months to 3 months later. The control patients received standard care of medications and monitoring to recover from their heart attack.<br /><br />At six months and again at one year into the study, Marban and his colleagues took additional MRIs of the patients’ hearts, to measure any changes in the size of their scar tissue. The patients who had received the heart cells showed markedly smaller scars and more living tissue over time, compared with those who received standard therapy. While reported abortions increased in 2010, 23,307 abortions is still the second-lowest annual total since the state of Michigan began requiring abortion reports in 1979. Michigan’s abortion rate and abortion ratio are still far below national averages despite our state’s difficult economic times. <br /><br />Here are a few noteworthy statistics from the report:<br /><br />Repeat abortions: More than half of the women (50.3 percent) having an abortion in 2010 were having a repeat abortion. Nearly a quarter (24.2 percent) of women who aborted had at least two previous abortions. For residents of Wayne County, 61 percent of women were having a repeat abortion and 33 percent had at least two previous abortions. <br /><br />Race: Black women continue to have a disproportionate number of abortions. According to estimates from the U.S. Census web site, black women compose about 15 percent of Michigan’s female population, but the MDCH report notes black women had 44 percent of the state’s abortions in 2010. White women compose about 80 percent of the state’s female population and had 49.6 percent of Michigan’s abortions.<br /><br />Teen abortions continue to decrease: The number of abortions performed on women younger than 20 decreased 3.4 percent to 3,964. This is the lowest number ever for this category and an incredible 71 percent decrease since 1987 when 13,624 women under 20 had abortions. The number of abortions performed on minors also decreased 4 percent to 1,410. <br /><br />Post first trimester abortions: A total of 2,813 abortions were performed after 12 weeks of pregnancy and 20 abortions were performed after the 24th week of pregnancy. <br /><br />Location: The vast majority of abortions are provided by abortion clinics. Only 37 abortions took place at hospitals in 2010. <br /><br />Right to Life of Michigan will continue to reach out to women in need so they know abortion is not their only option. The letter praised Planned Parenthood as a "trusted provider of health care for women" and urged Komen to reconsider its decision to defund the abortion giant. <br /><br />Komen decided to stop providing grants to Planned Parenthood as part of new policy to not provide grants to organizations under governmental investigation and a new drive to providing direct funding to organization which provide mammograms. Planned Parenthood doesn't provide mammograms and is currently being investigated by Congress and numerous states for the misuse of tax dollars. The defunding decision was quietly announced to Planned Parenthood who went on to create a media firestorm by attacking Susan G. Any grants to Planned Parenthood would be detrimental to women and their unborn children. No reason was given for why photos of prolifers were absent from the original story. <blockquote>Pro-lifers can take heart that they were heard by the TV station causing it to take action to correct the sleight. But the fact that CBS put up a slide show of photos taken at a pro-life rally but didn't feature a single photo of any pro-lifers pretty much shows the bias from which the TV station came when it initially posted the webpage.<br /><br />But even with the alteration, we still see CBS' bias. No reason is given for how simply allowing drivers who wish to select a specialty plate is an intrusion into their lives. <br /><br />She erroneously claims the license plate will cost the state of Michigan "$15,000 up front." The non-refundable up front costs are actually paid for by organization sponsoring the plates, not the state of Michigan. The state also makes money on every specialty plate which is sold. <br /><br />Berman then claims that in other states the money raised from "Choose Life" license plates have gone to "‘pregnancy centers' that have been accused of providing women with false medical information and overtly religious messages." Berman fails to mention that the pregnancy center accusers are abortion advocates. She also can't bring herself to recognize the good work of pregnancy centers which provide their services for free to women and families in need of diapers, baby food, formula, cribs, strollers, baby clothes, help with finding resources, etc. <br /><br />Finally, the original piece (which has now been corrected) showed that it was thrown together in haste and lacked the eye of a competent editor. Berman continuously misspelled the name of the legislation's sponsor, Senator Patrick Colbeck. Dr. Zhao is also using umbilical cord stem cells in a clinical trial on patients with Type 2 diabetes.<br /><blockquote>In the study the 12 participants had their T-cells – which were separated from their blood – pumped into a device Zhao calls a "stem cell educator."<br /><br />There the T-cells were exposed to cord blood stem cells for three hours, Zhao explained in an interview with the Star.<br /><br />The stem cells "re-educated the T-cells", said Zhao, who specializes in endocrinology, stem cells and immunology. "They wake them up and correct their function. The stems cells are like a teacher. The T-cells are like a bad student."<br /><br />Then the T-cells were pumped back into the participants' blood. High profile cases of abortionists being charged with murder, Michigan abortion clinics being closed and undercover investigation by prolifers all received headlines. Below are just a few cases of the abortion industry being exposed in 2011. <br /><br />In January of 2011, abortionist Kermit Gosnell, along with his wife and a number of his unlicensed employees were arrested and charged with killing a female patient and seven children who survived abortions. Gosnell allegedly killed seven "viable and alive" infants using scissors to sever their spinal cords. After Gosnell’s arrest, the release of a grand jury investigation and the description of Gosnell’s filthy abortion clinic, at least 11 Pennsylvania state employees, who took no action to shut down Gosnell’s clinic, were fired or resigned. Throughout the year, Gosnell’s employees have pled guilty to various crimes for the roles they played in Gosnell’s clinic. In light of the failings of Pennsylvania’s government agencies to inspect abortion clinics around the state, the Pennsylvania legislature passed and Governor Tom Corbett signed legislation in December of 2011 to regulate and regularly inspect Pennsylvania’s abortion clinics. <br /><br />In February of 2011, the youth-led prolife organization Live Action released a number of hidden camera videos exposing Planned Parenthood’s willingness to help undercover actors posing as sex traffickers get abortions for underage girls. The undercover investigation led to the firing of a manager at one Planned Parenthood abortion clinic and encouraged legislators working to defund Planned Parenthood. While efforts to defund Planned Parenthood stalled in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House voted 240-185 passing legislation to defund America’s leading abortion provider.<br /><br />In November of 2011, Michigan's prolife Attorney General Bill Schuette announced that two abortion clinics in Michigan closed permanently. The Lansing Health Care Clinic and Saginaw Women's Choice Clinic were temporarily closed by the order of an Eaton County judge earlier in November after Schuette accused them of operating illegally because neither was incorporated by a medical professional. The clinic owners are prevented from operating an abortion clinic in Michigan ever again. The investigation into these abortion clinics began after a local prolifer discovered the remains of aborted children in the Lansing abortion clinic’s dumpster.<br /><br />At the end of December 2011, Maryland authorities charged abortionists Steven Brigham and Nicola Riley with various counts of murder. Brigham is a notorious abortionist and abortion clinic owner who has a long history of problems with the law. He has had his license to practice medicine suspended in numerous states. For 14 months, prolife activists fought to keep Planned Parenthood from moving into a large building they purchased for nearly $750,000. Owners of a nearby hotel hold a deed restriction on the building and were opposed to Planned Parenthood moving in. Planned Parenthood has previously admitted plans to provide abortions at this location. <br /><br /><blockquote>A Michigan court has allowed a local Planned Parenthood to build a new abortion business in the Detroit area despite a restriction on the deed Planned Parenthood obtained for a building prohibiting an abortion clinic.<br /><br />The restriction was put in place by the owners of the Comfort Inn Hotel located behind the building Planned Parenthood purchased several years ago. In October 2010, attorneys for the abortion business tried to get the owners of the Comfort Inn to agree the building could be used as a "medical office" without mentioning that abortions would be done at the facility. However, Brigham was never charged with committing illegal abortions.<blockquote>At the time, investigators said there was evidence that Dr. Mark Binder, who worked for Brigham at the Central Avenue facility, American Women's Services, had performed abortions on fetuses that exceeded 24 weeks.<br /><br />Brigham was never prosecuted in New York on abortion charges. The girl sought help and a prolife law firm in Texas was able to get a temporary restraining order to protect her and her unborn child from her family.<blockquote>She sought out help after members of her family allegedly tried to force her to have an abortion last month. In one instance according to court documents, she was physically assaulted by a family member. In December one district judge granted a temporary restraining order. Wednesday, back in court, the girls attorneys had hoped to get that TRO extended through her pregnancy. But that didn't happen.<br /><br />"It's not the first case in Texas and these cases are very very under reported. Girls go through these situations they don't feel like they have a representative or an advocate and that's what TCDL does, is we let them know they're not alone. And they have a constitutional right to carry their child and protect their child," Stephen Casey and attorney with the Texas Center for Defense of Life......<br /><br />Again a hearing is set for the January 19 when Judge Medary will decide whether to continue to enforce the temporary restraining order or withdraw it. The report shows that once again, Planned Parenthood is America's leading abortion provider. In 2010, they provided 329,445 abortions. This is a slight decline from the 331,796 abortions they claim to have provided in 2009 and the first year abortions have declined at Planned Parenthood in over a decade. <br /><br />The report also reveals the number of adoption referrals at Planned Parenthood clinic dropped from 977 to 841, a 13.9% decrease. The number of prenatal services (which is different than the number of prenatal clients) was also down 23.2% from 40,489 in 2009 to 31,098 in 2010. <br /><br />For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2010, Planned Parenthood received $487.4 million dollars in tax dollars from government grants. Planned Parenthood ended the fiscal year with a profit of $14.9 million. The ads claim this is a prolife issue while completely ignoring the issue of abortion and Senator Carl Levin's and Senator Debbie Stabenow's 100% pro-abortion voting records. <blockquote>Sens. Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin (both D-Mich.) had 100 percent pro-abortion voting records in the 110th Congress (2007-08), but if the Evangelical Environmental Network (EEN) has its way, pro-life voters will think they’re pro-life.<br /><br />Why? Because the EEN considers support for the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed new limits on mercury emissions from power plants reason enough. You name a prominent disease and they promised the passage Proposal 2 would help lead researchers to finding that disease’s cure. They paraded countless individuals (including some teen and child patients) suffering from various ailments in front of the cameras and claimed voting against Proposal 2 would be voting against cures to their diseases. Pro-Proposal 2 ads stated “Vote Yes on Prop 2 as if lives and families depended on it.”<br /> <br />While prolife advocates pointed out the numerous flaws with the proposal’s language and noted the numerous scientific (immune system rejection and the formation of tumors) and ethical (the killing of human beings) problems with embryonic stem cell research and the unlikelihood of them ever leading to cures, the majority of voters couldn’t say no to the “best hope” for cures to little Ellie Clark’s diabetes and Lauren Jackson’s paralysis.<br /> <br />Three years later, it is clear the promises of Proposal 2’s unending cures aren’t going to materialize.<br /> <br />After studying human embryonic stem cells for more than a decade and spending in the neighborhood of $150 million on it, a biotechnology company called Geron recently ended the first FDA approved clinical trial on humans using cells created from embryonic stem cells. This is a huge blow to the field of embryonic stem cell research. The experiments were supposedly halted because Geron could no longer afford to continue the embryonic stem cell research program and instead would focus on cancer research. <br /> <br />When they closed the clinical trial, Geron’s chief executive noted there were “no signs” that any of the patients they treated were being helped by the treatment. So much for that “best hope.”<br /> <br />As the research progresses and alternatives to killing human embryos arise, former prominent advocates of embryonic stem cell research are turning away from the field due to the scientific implausibility and monetary impossibility of the cells ever being used in large scale ways to cure diseases.<br /> <br />Ian Wilmut, who used cloning to create Dolly the sheep, recently addressed a stem cell conference in California and urged fellow scientists to shift their focus away from embryonic stem cells and towards newer and safer forms of research. <br /><br />While leading scientists shift away from killing human embryos, some researchers in Michigan are still killing human embryos and using tax dollars to experiment on cells taken from these tiny human beings. The bill would require the remains of unborn children who are aborted or miscarried to be disposed of in a dignified manner. The bills were introduced last year <a href="http://rlmblog.blogspot.com/2010/10/aborted-babies-found-in-dumpster.html">after the remains of aborted children were found in an abortion clinic's dumpster.</a><br /><br />Berman argues the bills "impose a new opportunity for grief" on women who miscarry because women who miscarry at 10 weeks or later would have to sign a form indicating whether they want the remains of their unborn children to be buried, cremated or interred. <br /><br />Amazingly, Berman thinks women should have the completely unrestricted ability to have abortions but women shouldn't be able to choose how they want the remains of their unborn children treated. Wouldn't most women who miscarry be more traumatized not knowing how the remains of their unborn children were treated? Isn't it empowering to allow women to decide how their children's bodies are treated? Apparently, the decision to have an abortion is the only decision Berman views as empowering. <br /><br />Berman's opposition to this bill is incredibly radical. Only 5 Michigan senators voted against this legislation. A number of Michigan senators (Sen. Glenn Anderson, Sen. Morris Hood, Sen. Vince Gregory and Virgil Smith) who typically oppose any kind of prolife legislation voted in favor of this legislation. The lawsuit is focused on Health Care Clinic near Lansing and Women's Choice Clinic in Saginaw.<br /><br />The clinics have been operating for years as for-profit medical facilities without a licensed medical professional in charge. The owner of the clinics is not a medical professional and state law requires for‑profit corporations which provide medical care services to be run by licensed medical professionals. The Attorney General’s office is also moving to prevent the current abortion clinic owner from ever owning another for-profit medical facility. <br /><br />Schuette said, "To ensure accountability and patient safety, Michigan law requires medical facilities to be incorporated with a licensed medical professional at the helm. Strict enforcement of the law ensures medical clinics cannot put profit ahead of responsible patient care." <br /><br />In response to the lawsuit, Eaton County Circuit Court Judge Calvin Osterhaven signed a temporary restraining order (TRO). The clinics must remain closed until the date of the first hearing in the case. The hearing was scheduled for November 21, 2011. <br /><br />Schuette has also asked the State Bureau of Health Systems to look into evidence which suggests 50 percent or more of the procedures performed at the clinics are abortions. If more than 50 percent of their procedures are abortions, the clinics must be licensed under the Public Health Code as freestanding surgical outpatient facilities. Freestanding surgical facilities require a license which contains more stringent state regulations designed to protect patients. <br /><br />These abortion clinics were previously in the news in 2010 when the remains of 17 aborted children were found in a trash dumpster outside the Lansing-area abortion clinic along with the full names of female patients on clinic paperwork.<br /><br />In response to this discovery, state legislators have written <a href="http://rtl.org/legislation/PendingLegislation/DignifiedDispositionFetalRemains.html">legislation to ensure the humane disposition of the remains of aborted children.</a> This legislation passed the State House on October 20. <br /><br />The discovery of the aborted children also prompted the Attorney General’s office to launch an investigation which uncovered evidence the abortion clinics were improperly incorporated and may have broken additional state rules. <br /><br />Right to Life of Michigan President Barbara Listing said, "I laud Attorney General Schuette for following the law and pressing charges against these two abortion businesses. Those involved in the occupation of abortion are not above the law. But there were two challenges.<br /><br />First of all, it was 8:30 in the morning – and the pregnancy center wouldn’t open til 9:00.....<br /><br />The second challenge seemed a bit more formidable. While an ultrasound MACHINE was available, there might not be an ultrasound TECHNICIAN available......<br /><br />About the same time, yet another couple arrived for an appointment. After failing to create a cloned embryo who could survive long enough to be killed for her stem cells using regular cloning techniques, scientists at the New York Stem Cell Foundation decided to forego the step of removing the egg's nucleus. This means they created human embryos with 69 chromosomes instead of 46. Since the cells have an abnormal number of chromosomes, they could never be used to treat patients. <br /><br />The scientists paid $8,000 each to 16 women in order to obtain 270 eggs. <br /><blockquote>Some researchers, however, questioned the usefulness of the research.<br /><br />"These are grotesquely abnormal cells, so they have no clinical applications. Even scientifically they are of questionable value," said Maureen L. Condic, an associate professor of neurobiology and anatomy at the University of Utah.<br /><br />A political cross section of scientists, women's health advocates and bioethicists also expressed concern about paying women for the millions of eggs that would be demanded if the work ever led to treatments for common diseases. The University of Michigan Students for Life is hosting a display by the Genocide Awareness Project which displays images of aborted children alongside victims of the Holocaust and the genocide in Darfur. <br /><blockquote>LSA junior Carmen Allen, president of Students for Life, said the organization asked the Genocide Awareness Project to come to campus because many students here aren't concerned about abortions.<br /><br />"I think that the University of Michigan is the subject of a lot of apathy on campus that we have labeled tolerance," Allen said. "I think that abortion is an issue that has really fallen under that apathy. The Northern Illinois Women's Center in Rockford had its license suspended by the Illinois Department of Health after failing a follow-up inspection. The clinic was inspected in June of 2011 and received a plan of correction but when inspectors returned in September, they still found numerous health violations. <blockquote>The facility did not ensure the presence of a registered nurse in the operating room during all invasive and operative procedures.<br /><br />The facility did not ensure the presence of a registered nurse to direct and supervise the nursing personnel and the nursing care of patients.<br /><br />The facility did not ensure that either of the two physicians on staff have and maintain surgical practice privileges with an Illinois-licensed hospital.<br /><br />The facility did not have a written agreement with a laboratory that possesses a valid clinical laboratory improvement amendment certificate to perform any lab work that is not performed at the facility.
