On May 31, the U.S. House of Representatives conducted
a roll call vote on the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act (H.R. 3541), a bill to make it unlawful to perform or coerce a sex-selection abortion. The vote was 246-168 in favor of the bill – a strong majority, although short of the two-thirds vote required under Suspension of the Rules. The use of abortion as a means of sex selection is a major social problem in a number of Asian countries, including China and India, but it does not end there. Multiple academic papers have put forward evidence that the practice of sex-selection by abortion is increasing in the United States.
