Thank you Divine Child Elementary School, Mr. Polo’s 7th Grade Class

Right to Life of Michigan would like to congratulate and thank the students in Mr. William Polo’s 7th grade class. Mr. Polo’s class participated in a Book Bank program logging pages read.

The program also allowed the students to choose a charity to support.  We were excited to learn that Right to Life of Michigan was the charity of choice for Mr. Polo’s class.

Divine Child Elementary School Book Bank Coordinator Amy Moore said, “The students in Room 110 were the top readers in their grade for all of the six possible months [of the reading program].”
The Book Bank Program allows the students to raise money each month for a charity.

Right to Life of Michigan President Barbara Listing said, “I want to extend a special thank you for caring about those who are vulnerable and supporting the life-saving work of Right to Life of Michigan.”

Detroit Free Press recognizes that an “unborn baby” is alive, quickly changes to "fetus"

The Detroit Free Press editorial board predictably opposes any commonsense legislation which attempts to regulate abortion and would never use the term “unborn baby.”  However, a recent Free Press article features a story about the tragic case of an "unborn baby" killed by a drunk driver on Friday.  The mother is in stable condition.

However, an editor must have noticed the term "unborn baby" at some point and the article and title (which also originally included the term "unborn baby") were quickly changed and "unborn baby" was replaced by "fetus."

Here's text from the original article.
A Macomb County man was arraigned today after police say he ran a red light in Clinton Township while driving intoxicated and stuck another vehicle, injuring the pregnant driver and causing the death of her unborn baby.
Now here's the same text of the updated article.
A Macomb County man was arraigned today after police say he ran a red light in Clinton Township while driving intoxicated and stuck another vehicle, injuring the pregnant driver and causing the death of her fetus.

See the difference?

However, in their zeal to have their news reflect their editorial opinion, the Free Press didn't change one thing.  The web address of the article still uses the term "unborn baby"  as you can see below.

http://www.freep.com/article/20140623/NEWS04/306230145/A-Chesterfield-Township-man-is-to-be-arraigned-today6-23-after-he-is-accused-of-running-a-red-light-in-Clinton-Township-and-hitting-a-vehicle-injuring-the-pregnant-driver-and-causing-the-death-of-her-unborn-baby

The article currently does not note the changes in the text from the original article or provide an explanation.

Ohio man to spend year in jail for beating his daughter after she refused to have an abortion

Some abortion advocates claim legislative efforts to prevent women from being coerced into abortion are unnecessary.  A recent case from Ohio shows the lengths some people will go to get someone else to have an abortion.

A Fremont man pled guilty Thursday to a felony domestic violence charge and was sentenced to a year in prison for his role in the assault of his pregnant daughter in June 2013......

According to police reports, Brian Schultz drove his daughter to an abortion clinic in Cleveland and made an appointment for her after he found out she was pregnant. When they returned home, the daughter indicated she did not want to go through with the procedure. The girl said that he father punched her in the face and, along with her mother, proceeded to kick her in the stomach.

Thankfully, the young woman and her child survived the beating.  The child was born in December of 2013.

Toledo's last abortion clinic close to closing

The last abortion business in Toledo is close to closing. The University of Michigan tried to bail them out and keep abortions continuing by signing a transfer agreement, as required by Ohio state law for all ambulatory surgical centers. The Ohio Department of Health ruled against the agreement, however, since women suffering medical emergencies at the clinic would have to travel 52 miles by helicopter for proper care from a "local" hospital.

“We applaud the hearing examiner’s decision, which puts women’s health and patient safety ahead of politics,” said Michael Gonidakis, executive director of Ohio Right to Life. “No state regulator or reasonable person would permit an out-of-state hospital to contract with an Ohio abortion clinic to provide backup services. It’s absurd that this abortion clinic would even make such a request. Sadly, it appears that the clinic will put profits ahead of patient safety and attempt to delay and stall through litigation.”

Planned Parenthood officially opposes sex-selection abortion bans

Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California recently let pro-abortion legislators in their state know their organization opposes attempts to protect unborn children from being killed simply because they're the wrong sex.

The Planned Parenthood abortion business has come under fire from pro-lifers over the years for refusing to speak out against sex-selection abortions. Now, in a letter to members of the California state legislature, the abortion giant may have given a reason why: it opposes a ban on sex-selection abortions.

In a June 12, 2014, letter to lawmakers, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California hand-delivered a letter to all California Assembly Members and State Senators. A copy of the letter includes five bullet points and the fifth bullet point includes specific opposition to “sex selection abortion bans.”

Abortion proponents promise petition drive, instead deliver one sentence bill late in session

State Representative Sarah Roberts, a vocal supporter of abortion, recently introduced a one-sentence bill to repeal Michigan’s Abortion Insurance Opt-Out Law.

More than 315,000 Michigan citizens signed petitions to initiate legislation to ensure that they would not be forced to pay for abortions, through their tax dollars or their health insurance premiums. The citizen-initiated legislation was passed overwhelmingly by the Michigan House and the Michigan Senate, and the Abortion Insurance Opt-Out law went into effect on March 14, 2014.

After the legislation was presented to the state legislature, abortion advocates promised their own petition drive to collect signatures to challenge the law. They would have only been required to collect around 160,000 signatures to challenge the law by placing it on the ballot as a referendum. After conducting opinion polling and debating the issue, pro-abortion groups Planned Parenthood and the ACLU realized there was not enough public support for them to collect the signatures and win a vote on the issue.

Instead of doing the hard work of collecting hundreds of thousands of signatures, abortion supporters delivered a one-sentence bill on June 12, 2014, right before the state legislature went on recess.  The fact that Michigan voters for many years have elected prolife majorities in the state House and Senate means this pro-abortion bill is dead on arrival, unlike the dozens of common-sense prolife bills over the years which have worked their way through the Michigan legislative process and become law.  Considering abortion supporters have already raised funds off of a challenge to Michigan’s Abortion Insurance Opt-Out law, perhaps they wanted to make sure their promises weren’t completely empty.

In 1988, Michigan voters decisively voted to end taxpayer-funded abortions through the state’s Medicaid program. The following year, the number of abortions in Michigan dropped by more than 10,000. Hundreds of thousands of lives have been saved as a result since 1988. Laws that prevent people from being forced to pay for abortions both respect the conscience rights of citizens and save lives. Abortion supporters and abortion businesses which stand to profit from tax-subsidized abortions want to undo our state’s protections.

Unfortunately in some states like Connecticut, citizens have no choice under Obamacare but to now pay for abortions. Michigan citizens—including even many people who may think abortion should be legal but don’t want to be forced to pay for abortions—can rest assured they won’t find themselves being forced to pay for abortions in Michigan.

Euthanasia during Katrina crisis

At Public Discourse, Christopher White discusses a new book which sheds light on doctors in one New Orleans hospital who horrifically euthanized patients while rescue efforts were underway after Hurricane Katrina.

On day four—Wednesday, August 31—the first signs of real hope emerged as boats arrived to begin the massive transport operation for those remaining. At the same time, discussions began to take place among medical personnel about what should be done with patients whom they deemed unable to be transported by either boat or air. By day five, the situation appeared more desperate. Rescue was under way, but conditions continued to deteriorate. After one of the doctors made the decision to euthanize some of the animals on hand, Dr. Susan Mulderick, a colleague of Dr. Pou, thought that this seemed to be the most merciful way to treat some of the remaining patients as well. Mulderick sought out Pou, and a plan was formed.

Many of Memorial’s remaining patients were already on morphine to ease their pain. In a consultation with Dr. Ewing Cook, another member of the hospital’s staff, Pou was advised by Cook on how to administer a mix of morphine and benzodiazepine. As Fink recounts, “He later said that he believed that Pou understood that he was telling her how to help the patients ‘go to sleep and die.’” This use of morphine, unlike the patients’ current treatment, was not just for comfort. “What Cook was describing to Pou was something else entirely. The drug combination ‘cuts down your respiration so you gradually stop breathing and go out.’”

Remember that every life has value

Valerie Gatto, Miss Pennsylvania USA, was conceived after her mother was attacked and raped. Her mother originally intended to give her up for adoption, but decided to keep her at the last moment.  Kevin Williamson writes about Gatto and her mother's courage.

Valerie Gatto does not want to talk about abortion. That’s probably prudent, inasmuch as she very much desires to be the next Miss USA, and contestants in that pageant are expected to have ruthlessly anodyne interests along the lines of reading children’s literature to blind dolphins. But she is admirably direct, even bracing, about the aspect of her life that intersects that troublesome issue: She was conceived when her mother, a teenager at the time, was attacked on the streets of Pittsburgh and raped at knifepoint.....
The remarkable fact is that a not insignificant number of women who become pregnant through rape do not choose to terminate their pregnancies, deciding instead to forgo adding to the sum of violence in the world, even though a portion of it has been cruelly visited upon their own persons. In a culture that treats abortion as barely if at all distinguishable from mere contraception, that is heroic. And it is heroic regardless of our specific political differences on the issue of the legal standing of abortion, important — fundamentally important — as that question is.

Remembering Maya Angelou’s prolife testimony

On May 28, famous poet and author Maya Angelou passed away.  Unbeknownst to many, Maya Angelou chose life over abortion.  Feminists for Life has posted an article Angelou wrote for Family Circle magazine in 2001 regarding her teenage pregnancy and her decision to choose life.

I was scared to pieces. Back then, if you had money, there were some girls who got abortions, but I couldn’t deal with that idea. Oh, no. No. I knew there was somebody inside me. So I decided to keep the baby.......

I’m telling you that the best decision I ever made was keeping that baby! Yes, absolutely. Guy was a delight from the start — so good, so bright, and I can’t imagine my life without him.

Michigan woman charged with killing her infant

Melissa Mitin, a 24-year-old woman from Okemos, has been charged with murder after allegedly suffocating her newborn daughter.

According to court records, Dr. Joyce deJong, Ingham County’s medical examiner, ruled the death a “homicide due to a positional asphyxiation or due to a positional cause,” although she could not determine during autopsy how the baby was suffocated.

In his testimony, Reed said Mitin had not known about her pregnancy and the baby’s death “had been intentional — or intentional acts involved in (an) attempt to conceal this birth.”

Washington Post fails to check science on when life begins, exposes media's bias on abortion

In a flailing attempt to attack a prolife politician for making a statement about the science of when life begins, the Washington Post exposed how media bias on abortion prevents most journalists from doing what they should do.

At the Federalist, Brandon McGinley examines the number of errors in the Washington Post piece and compares the blind eye most journalists turn towards the abortion industry to Upton Sinclair’s work to expose the meatpacking industry.

I couldn’t help but think of the celebrated muckraker Sinclair as Philip Bump’s attempt to discuss when life begins on the Washington Post’s “The Fix” blog ricocheted around the Internet yesterday.  It wasn’t just the content of Bump’s effort at explanatory journalism—the obedient acceptance of a pro-abortion organization’s spin, the ignorance of embryonic science—that was so galling.  More than that, it was the posture of incuriosity toward his topic that showed just how poorly today’s media compares with the courageous figures of years past......

In the same way, the media continues to permit the practice of abortion in America to go on without scrutiny.  Let us be clear: This is not a political complaint, but a journalistic scandal.  The great conceits of journalism—speaking truth to power, confronting the public with uncomfortable realities, giving a voice to the voiceless—are all abandoned when it comes to abortion.

What if we had a latter-day Upton Sinclair willing to expose our abortion regime, rather than the incurious mandarins who pathetically claim his mantle?  What would he find when he opens the door to the dungeon?

We’ve seen this bias and blind eye in Michigan as well.  When Right to Life of Michigan released a thorough, in-depth report on abortion clinic abuses and state regulatory agency failure in Michigan, the majority of media outlets could have cared less.  It wasn’t until the city of Muskegon shut down the filthy abortion clinic operated by Robert Alexander (more than a year after the initial report was released), that a couple of media outlets began to expose the problems which were noted in the report.

When we exposed that the Michigan Democratic Party used a notorious abortion clinic owner in an ad supporting Gary Peters and that part of the ad was likely filmed inside an abortion clinic, not a single mainstream media outlet in Michigan took notice.

Warren Buffett has given more than $1 billion to pro-abortion groups

Columnist Dan Gainor did the math and found that Warren Buffett gave pro-abortion groups $1.2 billion from 2001 to 2012. That's enough money to pay for approximately 2.7 million abortions. He's given a massive sum, almost $290 million, to Planned Parenthood.

Remembering Gosnell and his crimes

Convicted murderer and former abortionist Kermit Gosnell
May 13th, 2014, is the one year anniversary of abortionist Kermit Gosnell being convicted for 3 counts of first degree murder in the deaths of children who survived his attempt to abort them.

Joe Carter lists "9 Things You Should Know About the Gosnell Infanticide and Murder Trial."

1. Gosnell was arrested in January 2011, charged with eight counts of murder: one patient died under his care after a botched abortion, and seven infants supposedly born alive whose spinal cords Gosnell  severed with scissors.
2. According to prosecutors in Philadelphia, Gosnell catered to minorities, immigrants, and poor women, and made millions of dollars over 30 years performing illegal and late-term abortions in squalid and barbaric conditions. Gosnell took extra precautions with white women from the suburbs, according to the grand jury report. He ushered them into a slightly cleaner area because he thought they would be more likely to file a complaint.

Thanking the women who brought his children into this world

In the New York Post, columnist William McGurn shares some thoughts on Mother’s Day and his appreciation for his wife and the biological mothers of his children.

Mother’s Day is a good day in our house, partly because of the general bonhomie that links us with the many moms in our lives. There’s my wife, the mother of my children. There’s also her mother and my mother, both still with us and adored by their grandchildren.
And in the special recesses of our hearts, there are three more. These are the women who brought our daughters into the world — three women in China whom we have never met and whose names we don’t even know but to whom we owe our family.

Temple University football player shares how he was almost aborted

Khalif Hebrin is wide receiver/kick returner for the Temple University football team.  The Philadelphia Daily News recently shared his personal story of almost being aborted and being saved by Lynda Jones, who adopted him.

In September 1994, Jones received a long-distance call from a cousin she'd never been close with, Denise Herbin (pronounced UR-bin). The voice sounded frantic, saying she was going to have an abortion. So Jones immediately drove from North Jersey to South Carolina.........

"I'm not supposed to be here. My mom was going to get an abortion. I've come to understand just how fragile life is, how important the small things are. Just being able to wake up. I know in the back of my mind, a lot of people didn't wake up today. Or they might not get to sleep tonight."

Every November, Khalif celebrates his biological mother’s birthday even though he hasn’t seen her in 15 years.

"People wonder why I would do that for someone who didn't want me," Khalif explained. "My mom encouraged that when I was a kid. [She] could have got an abortion. She was smart enough to say, 'I'm going to give him to the right person.' "

Detroit News' Laura Berman doesn’t understand health insurance law

Detroit News columnist Laura Berman doesn’t like Michigan’s Abortion Insurance Opt-Out law which opts the state out of abortion insurance coverage except by optional rider.

Her newest column’s title declares “Michigan abortion insurance riders just a mirage” and claims that federal law outlaws insurance companies from offering riders.

Since Berman doesn’t cite the part of the law she’s referring to, it’s difficult to understand the source of her claim below.

Not so. In fact, the state “opt-out” rider law clashes with provisions of the Affordable Care Act, which outlaws both separate riders and any government subsidy of abortion. Under federal law, insurers cannot offer a rider to a standard, inclusive policy. And the new state law bars insurers from including elective abortion coverage in any policy, on or off the exchange.

The Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) doesn’t outlaw separate riders.  Starting in 2014, it outlaws exclusionary riders in all health insurance plans.  This appears to be what Berman is talking about.  Exclusionary riders are a form of rider which insurers used to exclude covering a certain condition or body part.  Other riders, which add coverage to plans, are not outlawed.

The Affordable Care Act explicitly allows states to opt-out of abortion coverage.  This is why more than 20 states have opted out of abortion insurance coverage, including many which have included optional rider language.

That Berman doesn’t understand this shows the shoddiness of her work.  In her never ending attempts to attack this prolife law, Berman assumes legislators lied without doing the research necessary to know what she’s writing about.  Berman is entitled to her own opinion on whether insurance should cover abortion but she’s not entitled to make up stuff.

Berman goes on to disprove her assertion and her column's title later in the column when she notes that a number of insurance companies are offering abortion riders in their group plans at a very small cost. Obviously, abortion insurance isn't a mirage.

Group insurance isn’t affected by the federal health care reform, so some of the state’s largest insurers — including Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan, Health Alliance Plan and United Health Care — are offering riders to large group customers......

So far, the group abortion riders are affordable. For example, Blue Cross charges its corporate customers a penny to 32 cents per member for the rider.

Group insurance isn’t affected by the federal health care reform?  What an absurd assertion.  Does Berman not understand the federal health care law at all?  Anyone who knows anything about Obamacare knows that it does affect group insurance.

Berman is upset that insurance companies are, at this point, apparently not offering abortion insurance riders on individual plans.  As shown above, this is not because insurance companies can't, it's because they've decided not to at the moment, most likely because the demand for them is so low.  Only 3% of Michigan's abortions were paid for by insurance in 2012.  If Berman is upset insurance companies in Michigan aren't offering a product she believes should be available, then she should take it up with them.

Senate Majority PAC ad misrepresents Terri Lynn Land

The Senate Majority PAC has produced an ad which misrepresents Michigan's U.S. Senate candidate Terri Lynn Land by deceitfully citing Right to Life of Michigan. The ad falsely states that Terri Lynn Land wants to outlaw common forms of birth control.

Right to Life of Michigan President Barbara Listing said, "I want to set the record straight. Right to Life of Michigan does not have a position on contraception. It is reprehensible to cite Right to Life of Michigan in a deceptive political ad as the source of Terri Lynn Land's position on an issue in which we are not involved."

Right to Life of Michigan was never contacted by the Senate Majority PAC regarding our endorsement criteria or our policies as an organization.

The Right to Life of Michigan PAC, which has endorsed Terri Lynn Land for the U.S. Senate, does not consider the issue of birth control when making endorsements of candidates. Right to Life of Michigan is focused on abortion, infanticide and assisted suicide.

Terri Lynn Land's opponent, Rep. Gary Peters and his allies, cannot defend Peters' radical pro-abortion position which includes support for partial-birth abortion, sex-selection abortions and tax funded abortions. Because of Gary Peters' extreme position in support of abortion through all nine months of pregnancy, he has tried to attack Terri Lynn Land by misrepresenting her.

Listing said, "For those looking for the truth about candidates, consider the source. It is clear the Senate Majority PAC cannot be trusted."

Michigan Democrats use late-term abortion clinic owner to attack Terri Lynn Land - Really?

The Michigan Democratic Party recently released a video in which a number of women attack U.S. Senate candidate Terri Lynn Land and praise Congressman Gary Peters, who is also a candidate for U.S. Senate.

One of the women in the ad appears to be abortion clinic owner Renee Chelian.

Chelian is the owner of Northland Family Planning, a group of three abortion clinics in the Detroit area which provide abortions through 24 weeks of pregnancy.  They provide around 1/4 of all abortions performed in Michigan.  We recently noted how the Northland abortion clinics were using abortion coupons to bring in customers.

At the start of the video the woman below says, “I’m Renee” and later says, “Choosing Gary Peters means protecting my daughters’ and your daughters’ future.”

Below is a photo of Renee Chelian from an article in Bloomberg Business which revealed that Chelian and her husband paid themselves more than $200,000 in 2012 and live in a "6,500-square-foot home in the upscale neighborhood of West Bloomfield."  It appears that Chelian might even be wearing the same pink shirt she wore the day of the Bloomberg photo shot.

Renee Chelian via Bloomberg Business

It also appears the video of Renee may have even been shot at one of her abortion clinics.  While making her comments on the video, Renee is standing in front of “Exam Room 1" which has a exam chair in the upright position with the stirrups up.

Northland's Abortion Business is Booming

In an interview with a pro-abortion web site, Lara Chelian, the appointment center manager at Northland, said the late-term abortion business at the Northland abortion clinics has been growing recently as a number of abortion clinics in Ohio have closed.  In that interview, she said:
“We estimate 30 to 40 patients a month are coming from Ohio, and that is a low estimate,” said Chelian. “It seems to increase every week because of the clinic closures and people making appointments for late-term abortions.”

While Renee Chelian thinks electing Gary Peters means protecting "your daughters' future," Chelian doesn't believe in protecting all daughters.  Every year, thousands of unborn Michigan daughters are killed at her abortion clinics in Michigan and she and her family profit off of it.

Local sheriff in Michigan saved life by refusing to transport inmate for abortion

Sheriff Kim Cole via Mason County Press
The Mason County Press shared Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole's speech at the Mason County Right to Life dinner.  Sheriff Cole saved a child's life by not agreeing to transport a female inmate for an abortion without a court order.  The woman eventually changed her mind, choose life and made an adoption plan for her child.

“Last summer, sometime in July or August, I was sitting at my desk and the department nurse came to see me. She told me that we had another pregnant inmate — we had four at one time — at that the girl wanted an abortion.

“I said no. The taxpayers of Mason County weren’t going to pay for that. If she wanted to get an abortion she would have to get a court order.”
........
“She gave me a call on my cell phone and I got to go to the hospital and hold the little guy,” Cole said. “I keep a picture of us together on my desk and on my phone.”
